A multidisciplinary creative focused on engagement, joy, laughter, character and storytelling.

Josh C. Crawford is a professional improviser, instructor, actor, writer, illustrator, and filmmaker with over 20 years of experience in performance and storytelling, with a focus on engagement, joy, and laughter.

Raised in Lone Tree, Iowa, he discovered improvisation as a blend of acting, comedy, and live storytelling. He trained in Chicago at the Players Workshop of Second City, iO Theater, the Second City Conservatory, and the Annoyance Theatre, developing a foundation rooted in honesty, commitment, and narrative exploration.

Performance & Teaching

For 25 years, Josh has performed throughout the Midwest with Runaway Minds, The Blacklist, Well Done Phoenix & Lady Franklyn, and Ginger Pets, and has taught workshops across the region. Known as The Improv Monkey, he brings a playful yet disciplined approach to both performance and instruction.

He specializes in character-driven improvisation centered on psychology, desire, and point of view. His workshop Be a Character helps performers develop characters through physicality, voice, and emotional truth.

Acting & Theatre

In addition to his improvisational work, he has experience in scripted theatre and brings that discipline into his performance and teaching.

Art & Writing

He maintains an active visual art practice and writes fiction, scripts, and creative concepts.

Film & Media

His filmmaking includes short films, character studies, and experimental works that integrate writing, performance, illustration, and direction.

He is available for improv instruction, coaching, performance, acting, writing, illustration, voice work, and collaboration.

Core principle: creativity grows through curiosity, commitment, and presence.
